Masjid ‘Ēsa Ibn Maryam, which translates to “The Mosque of Jesus, Son of Mary”, based on 14 Etwall Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, B28 0LE, was formerly a Church (Trinity United Reformed Church). It was purchased in May 2017 as a place of worship and a community hub for the growing Muslim community living in its vicinity. After a period of renovation works the Masjid was open for daily services during late January 2018.
The name “‘Ēsa Ibn Maryam” or “The Mosque of Jesus, Son of Mary” for the new Mosque was chosen in order to educate the community on the importance and significance of the Messiah in the Islamic faith. The beliefs of Muslims concerning the Messiah, Jesus, peace be upon him, are that he was one of Allah’s noble Messengers born to a virgin Mary (called “Maryam” in Arabic, peace be upon her). Allah sent him to the Children of Israel to call them to believe in Allah alone and worship Him alone.
Allah says: “And (remember) when ‘Ēsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: ‘O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah unto you, confirming the Tawraah [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad.’ But when he (Ahmad, i.e. Muhammad) came to them with clear proofs, they said: ‘This is plain magic’”
Currently, Masjid ‘Ēsa Ibn Maryam is the main venue for most of the services provided by the charity organisation, ArRahma Foundation.
